Development of the
Wiltipoll Sheep
The Wiltipoll Sheep are an Australian breed of sheep developed from a british breed,
"the Wiltshire Horn".
The Wiltipoll sheep, was developed in 1995 by initially crossing a polled breed (merino,
poll dorset, border leister etc) with a Wiltshire Horn ram. Then the progeny from that was crossed back
again with a Wiltshire Horn and so on, five times to get a purebred "Class A" Wiltipoll Sheep which has a minimum
96.87% Wiltshire Horn blood. Then two purebred "Class A" wiltipolls are joined together to finally end up with
a fully polled Wiltipoll "Class A1" sheep with all the excellent meat & shedding qualities of the Wiltshire
Horn but without the horns.
The Wiltipoll Sheep is bred purely for it's exceptional lean meat and low maintenance.
