Why Wiltipoll Sheep?

Fully Shedding = Low maintenance & Low costs

·        No Shearing 

   - short wool coat that naturally "fully" sheds in spring each year and falls to the ground.

  - underbelly, breach, legs, face are naturally bare all year round

·        No Dipping or back-lining - lice & fly strike resistant 

·        Tail docking is purely optional and usually only done for cosmetic reasons. 

·        Grass seed resistant due to a thicker skin.

  - skin can produce high quality, thick leather.

·        Hardy Feet - great for wet conditions and are not usually susceptible to foot problems.

·       Are very hardy and thrive in poor conditions and are easily adaptable to a a variety of climates.

·        Usually very easy on fences.

·        Ideal for organic production due to lack of chemicals required to maintain this breed. 

·        Great temperament.  

Ewes maternal qualities:

·       Very Fertile, often averaging 140 – 180% lambing rates  

-   Multiple births (often having twins and even triplets) 

-   Have an abundance of milk. Easily supporting twins and therefore also great for sheep dairies.

-   Have great maternal qualities and usually lamb unassisted.  

-   They rarely mismother and are extremely protective of their lambs.

-   Ewes are seasonal breeders, coming into season in autumn and lambing in late winter to spring, hence ram can be left in with ewes all year round. (Rams can be used all year round and  excellent terminal sires)

Prime Lamb

·        Excellent meat quality  

-  Very lean, tasty meat 

-  They gain weight without laying down fat.

-  High dressing percentages can be achieved, often yielding over 50%  

-  Sheep put energy put into producing meat & milk rather wool 

 So keep farming prime lamb without all the work &costs .....
